Mimusops elengi also known as Spanish cherry, Medlar, Bullet wood, or Magizha maram in Tamil, is an evergreen original to South and South East Asia, and Northern Australia. Often cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions for timber and ornamental purposes, the tree can grow up to 30 metres tall and has a trunk of diameter up to 1 metre with a dense green canopy.
It’s Uses
Widely featured in ancient literature, Medlar is famous for its sweet scented white flowers ( used to make garlands), symmetrical structure and endless medicinal properties. Their characteristic deep-orange fruits invite a diverse range of native and migratory birds that find food and nesting in the tree and are also a much loved delicacy among children.
The tree’s bark, seeds, fruits, leaves and flowers each come with numerous health benefits. Some conditions they can cure are: Headaches, Sinusitis, Dysmenorrhea, Diarrhoea, Bacterial infections, Diabetes and Insomnia.
