Herbal remedies have been used from time immemorial for the treatment and prosperity of human beings. A major portion of therapeutic plants are commonly utilized on a daily basis without knowing their restorative significance. Annona cherimola is one amongst them commonly known as custard apple. It is a small deciduous evergreen fruit with astonishing yet lesser known nutritional facts. The fruit also received a geographic indication in 2014 for its unparalleled taste and health benefits.

It was first discovered in the Mughal empire under the rule of Akbar and was first mentioned in the book Ain-I-Akbari and derived its name from its nature of having a cool effect on the body. Members of this genus are typically evergreen or semideciduous plants and cannot tolerate frost. The leaves can be leathery or hairy and are generally ovate with smooth margins. The unusual flowers feature six to eight fleshy curved petals in two whorls and numerous stamens and pistils. The fruits are often scaly and succulent and are sometimes segmented. This fruit is thoroughly enjoyed throughout the world in different ways of eating wherein some places it is consumed fresh off the trees and in some places it is consumed in the form of jellies and is also preserved to be used in cooking dishes.

It’s Uses

Custard apple is a primitive fruit with many underlying controversies on its origin and health benefits. Often being referred to as a sugary fruit that boost the blood sugar level. A lot many real benefits of the fruit are not known by many and is a fact to be acknowledged that the fruit helps in performing miracles in the body like reducing oxidative stress, help in faster and better wound healing and 100 grams of the fruit contains 24% of magnesium which is the daily standard magnesium intake of an individual thus making it suitable for consumption for heart-related disorders. It contains essential minerals and fiber making it one of the most overall beneficial fruits. Children to old aged people without care can fully cherish and benefit from the healthiness.
