Be it a celebration or any festivity, we enjoy every bit of it, but most of us do not bother to look back at the amount of rubbish we have accumulated. Most of us do not care to dispose of that rubbish properly either. It is time we learn how to properly dispose of it; not only would it make our surrounding cleaner but it would also make us more responsible members of society.

Here are some ways in which you can effectively treat your rubbish!

1. Waste Segregation:

  • Waste segregation is the practice of separating different types of waste at the source to make recycling and proper disposal more effective.
  • Divide your waste into categories like recyclables (paper, cardboard, glass, plastics), organic waste (food scraps, yard waste), and non-recyclables (anything that doesn’t fit the other categories).
  • Use designated bins or containers for each waste category, clearly labeled to make it easy for everyone to participate.

2. Sanitary Waste Disposal:

  • Sanitary waste, which includes used sanitary napkins, tampons, and other personal hygiene products, should be handled with care.
  • Use designated sanitary disposal bins in restrooms and public places. These bins are typically lined with biodegradable bags.
  • Wrap sanitary waste in biodegradable bags or paper before disposing of it in a regular trash bin.
  • Never flush these items down the toilet, as it can lead to sewage system blockages.

3. Hazardous Waste and Its Disposal:

  • Hazardous waste is any waste that poses a threat to human health or the environment due to its chemical, biological, or physical characteristics.
  • Common examples of hazardous waste include batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, electronic devices, paint, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
  • To dispose of hazardous waste:
    • Contact your local waste management authority to find out about designated collection points or hazardous waste disposal events.
    • Do not throw hazardous waste in regular trash bins, as it can harm the environment and public health.
    • Follow your local regulations and guidelines for proper disposal and recycling of hazardous waste.

4. Avoiding Non-Eco-Friendly Substances:

  • Reduce your use of non-eco-friendly products and substances by making conscious choices.
  • Avoid single-use plastics by opting for reusable alternatives, like water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers.
  • Choose eco-friendly cleaning products that are biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals.
  • Use cloth napkins and reusable cutlery to reduce reliance on disposable items.
  • Support companies and brands that prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

5. Reduce Unnecessary Replacements:

  • Repair and maintain items whenever possible instead of replacing them, especially electronics like mobiles, computers, etc.
  • Prioritize quality over quantity when making purchases to ensure longevity.

By implementing these waste management strategies and adopting practices that emphasize waste segregation, proper disposal, and the avoidance of non-eco-friendly substances, you can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible lifestyle.
