The Papilio polymnestor is a butterfly species exclusively sighted in regions of India and Sri Lanka. Commonly called the blue mormon, this insect has velvet black wings, with a span of 12 to 15 centimetres, decorated by pale blue streaks and spots.
If you are from The southern parts of India or Sri Lanka, chances are you’ve met the blue mormon at least once. They are not considered a threatened species and are present in large numbers in Sri Lanka due to the availability of their preferred snack, the family Rutaceae.
Though these butterflies are present in deciduous areas, they love high rainfall regions and rainforests! The male of the species however happens to enjoy a bit of sunlight and avoids shade for a major part of his day. The females lay eggs on the top leaves of their food plant around 10 feet above the ground.
Since urban gardens have begun to include their favourite food plants, the insects are now inhabitants of cities and semi-urban landscapes.
