Parenting, beyond its traditional meaning, carries a myriad of life-altering connotations, often humorously daunting. Today, it has transformed into a more complex and task-oriented activity. The challenges begin when we fail to see it as an integral part of our lives, rather than a compulsory duty.

Children today are often isolated from their peers, forcing them to adopt premature maturity, which is unnatural for their developmental stage. Reflect on your own childhood, filled with interactions with cousins, neighbourhood kids, and siblings. Now, consider the number of friends your child has. Confined spaces and engagement with gadgets lead to more problems than benefits. Modern children’s TV shows and videos, instead of being educational, often overstimulate, detaching kids from reality and impairing emotional development, empathy, and apathy.

Here are some recommendations for contemporary parenting. Firstly, avoid fixating on rigid ideas about your child. They are young and need room to grow through learning and unlearning. Preferences in food, activities, and behaviours should be flexible, allowing for growth. Children need to be moulded, embracing diverse experiences. This approach extends to their eating habits, handling responsibilities, relationships, and communication. Ignoring timely changes can lead to ignorance and arrogance.

When you say “No” to a particular behaviour, ensure consistency. Inconsistent discipline confuses their sense of morality. Stick to your principles until your child is mature enough to understand them fully. Encourage accepting failure and sharing to foster a healthy environment.

Parents often have high expectations regarding their child’s achievements, goals, and skills, leading to mental exhaustion before they even turn 20. Replacing evening tuitions with ample playtime with peers is highly beneficial.

Be mindful of how you express anger or negative emotions, as these can significantly impact your child’s future behaviour. Remember, your current relationship with your child will influence their future relationships. Teach them not just academics but also daily chores and fun activities at home. Despite busy schedules, spending quality time with your children is crucial. Parents are the best teachers and friends for their kids.

Technology and gadgets pose a common problem. Over-dependence on gadgets detaches children from reality and weakens familial bonds. It adversely affects their attention span and academic performance. Encourage playing and spending time in nature with peers instead. Children do not need gadgets at a young age; parental guidance and engagement are essential. Prioritize family and cultural values over internet norms. These organic values help children socialize better and prevent alienation. Remember, you are raising a family member, not just another global consumer. Teach kindness, humility, respect, and the importance of spending time with others. By making this process natural and organic, parenting will become more convenient and fulfilling.
